How to Add, Crop, and Edit Photos in Canva
This reusable guide applies to photo booth templates, save the dates, invitations, and Canva websites that contain photo frames.
1. Prepare your photos
- Use the highest-resolution originals available.
- Avoid screenshots or images downloaded from social media when possible.
- For print products, use sharp photos with enough resolution at the final printed size.
2. Upload photos
- Open your template in Canva.
- Select Uploads, then Upload files.
- Choose the photos from your device and wait for them to finish uploading.
3. Place a photo in a frame
- Drag the uploaded photo over the placeholder frame.
- Release it when the frame highlights and the photo snaps into place.
- Double-click the photo to adjust its position and crop.
- Move or scale the image until the important part is centered, then select Done.
4. Make a photo black and white
- Select the photo and open the image editing controls.
- Use a black-and-white filter or reduce saturation fully.
- Check skin tones and contrast so faces remain clear.
5. Replace or remove a photo
Drag a different photo onto the same frame to replace it. To remove the image without deleting the frame, select the placed photo carefully and use the available replace or delete control.
Photo quality checklist
- Faces are sharp and not covered by text.
- Important details are away from the crop edges.
- Photos have consistent brightness and color treatment.
- The design still looks clear at 100% zoom.
- For websites, preview on both desktop and mobile.
If a photo will not stay in a frame, see the Canva Troubleshooting and FAQ page.
